Lens planning starts with the tasks that matter to you
01

Why it may be discussed

It may enter the conversation for selected patients with presbyopia, a prescription poorly suited to corneal laser, or early lens changes. It is not simply an advanced version of LASIK: the surgery is inside the eye, permanently removes natural accommodation and has its own retinal and lens-related risks.

02

Choosing the focus strategy

A monofocal lens can target one main distance, sometimes with monovision. Toric optics address suitable regular astigmatism. Enhanced monofocal or EDOF lenses extend useful range, while multifocal or trifocal designs split light across distances. Every option trades some priorities for others.

03

Measurements before surgery

Biometry, corneal measurements, ocular-surface treatment, pupil assessment, macular OCT, optic-nerve and retinal examination, lifestyle needs and tolerance of optical symptoms all influence the plan. Repeat measurements may be needed when the tear film is unstable.

04

What surgery can and cannot promise

The aim is to reduce dependence on glasses at agreed distances. Residual prescription, reading glasses for fine print, glare, halos, reduced contrast or a later enhancement can still occur. No lens recreates a young natural lens perfectly.

05

Risks and alternatives

Infection, inflammation, pressure change, retinal tear or detachment, macular swelling, posterior capsule opacification, lens position problems and dissatisfaction with optical quality are possible. Continued glasses, contact lenses, corneal laser or waiting until cataract surgery may be safer choices for some people.

Build the decision around your visual priorities

The consultation should compare the benefit of lens independence with the permanent and intraocular nature of the procedure.
