The artificial lens used in cataract surgery is not chosen by price or by the number of focal points alone. The correct IOL plan connects biometry, corneal astigmatism, macular and optic-nerve health, night-driving needs, reading distance and how much optical compromise a patient is willing to accept.

A monofocal IOL gives one principal focus, commonly planned for distance. It generally prioritizes contrast and fewer night-light phenomena, but reading glasses are usually needed. Monovision can be simulated or discussed for selected patients.
A toric IOL has different powers along different axes to reduce suitable regular corneal astigmatism. Stable surface measurements, total corneal assessment and accurate axis placement matter. Toric describes cylinder correction and can be combined with different focus designs.
Enhanced monofocal lenses may provide more intermediate range than a conventional monofocal, while EDOF designs aim for an elongated focus from distance toward intermediate. Near glasses may remain necessary, and contrast or night symptoms depend on the specific optics and eye.
These lenses distribute light to more than one focal point to reduce dependence on glasses across distances. Halos, glare, lower contrast and a period of neural adaptation are genuine trade-offs. Corneal irregularity, significant dry eye, macular disease or advanced glaucoma may make a simpler optic preferable.
Accurate biometry, keratometry, topography or tomography, ocular-surface stability, macular OCT and a dilated examination help predict whether an advanced lens can perform well. Previous laser surgery needs additional calculation strategies.
The goal is a useful range aligned with your priorities—not a guarantee of total spectacle independence. Residual refractive error, fine-print glasses, optical symptoms or another procedure may still be needed even after careful planning.
