01

How an ICL corrects vision

The lens is inserted through a small incision and positioned behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. It adds focusing power without removing corneal tissue. The lens power, overall size and relationship to the eye's internal anatomy are calculated before surgery.

02

Who may be considered?

Possible candidates are generally adults with stable refraction, suitable anterior-chamber dimensions, an adequate endothelial cell count, a healthy retina and no condition that makes intraocular surgery unacceptably risky.

  • Higher myopia or selected other prescriptions
  • Thin or otherwise laser-unsuitable corneas
  • Clear natural lens and appropriate internal-eye anatomy
  • Realistic understanding of benefits and risks
03

The ICL assessment

Testing may include manifest and cycloplegic refraction, corneal tomography, anterior-chamber depth and angle measurements, white-to-white or other sizing data, endothelial cell count, pupil assessment, eye pressure and a dilated retinal examination.

04

Recovery and follow-up

Vision often improves early, but inflammation, pressure and lens position must be checked. Drops and activity restrictions are individualized. Longer-term review monitors the cornea, eye pressure, the space between the implanted and natural lens, and the natural lens itself.

05

Risks and alternatives

Possible problems include infection, inflammation, raised pressure, endothelial cell loss, glare or halos, sizing or position concerns, cataract formation, retinal complications and the need for another procedure. Alternatives may include glasses, contact lenses, laser correction or, at a different life stage, lens exchange.
